When to replace/upgrade it?

Don't replace it just because Windows crashes
Whatever's not working should be reinstalled first.  So long as your Microsoft sticker has a valid product key, Windows should be reinstallable.
Unsure?  Then make sure you can restore!
Ways to ensure a computer or network restores if a software installation fails, including obtaining a reinstallation if you don't have the media.  Such as lost CD or backup partition; when a hard disk fails, has to be replaced & there's no restore CD/DVD.
Get Windows 7 and keep your existing System
